What
is the government doing about the UGMC?
Few years ago the
University of Ghana Medical Centre was established to facilitate and enhance
the health service for the people of Ghana and beyond. These facility has 650
beds that will contain people. The cost involving this project is overwhelming.
217 million dollars. This is not a small amount of many. Phase 1 of the facility
has been completed and no work has yet taken place. Why is the government not
paying attention to this project?
In a country that we
polities everything that we do, how can such country transform in terms of
development? What we understand is that, government is a continuous process. We
cannot finish the process of governance. Government will go, another government
will. But if successive governments do not have the will to continue the
previous project done or started by the previous government how can the country
develop. We try to play politics with everything that we do, even with our
health issues.
I remember when the NDC
government took over the affairs of the country, they ignored all the
affordable houses started by the Kufour administration. I thought this
government would have learnt from this experience and would not have trodden on
the same path. But here we are after taking over the administration, they have
also tried to disregard the nice facility being put in place.
Some few months ago, our
vice president went on medical leave. Do you know where he went to? He went to the United Kingdom to have that checkup.
That same facility being neglected by his government could have helped him
solve the problem. The explanations I hear the minister of Health always give
does not make sense to me. He complains that, the facility is not finished yet,
so it cannot start operation. What about the phase 1? Can’t we start something
from there?
I must pay homage to my
Comrade Mr. Reginald Sekyi Brown a final year of the University of Ghana
studying pharmacy. This very young man had started a campaign called #OPENUGMC
NOW. Well yesterday he surprised many people by storming a function that had
the first lady present. In the middle of
her speech, Mr. Reginald went close to show a placard that had the inscription
#OPENUGMC NOW. HMMM. You know what our police can do… The security detail of the first lady handed
him over to the police at the Korle bu police station. This young man was
detained for about five hours before he was granted bail. I wish the police had
arrested the security personnel of the first lady not Mr. Reginald. How on
earth can they allow him to get close to her like that? Assuming Mr. Reginald
was a wicked person, he would have achieved is motive before they would have
arrested him. These men are sleeping on the job. They need to be fired. They
put the woman’s life in danger. They cannot even assure her safety.
I am for Reginald Sekyi
Brown and most students here at the University of Ghana are also behind him. It
does not matter the manner in which he did the thing. What matters most is
that, at the end of the incident the government has taken notice of it. The
whole country and everyone in the world is now aware of this incident. The
government need to act. He should take issues seriously and stop politicking
with issues that has national interest. we cannot play with our health matters.
Sometimes you do not need
to do what is necessary before you address your grievances before the public.
In this case we are looking at the out of the act. Is it positive or negative?
He is a citizen of Ghana and as such have the right to demonstrate. The University
of Ghana Medical Centre should be opened now! The place is really causing
financial lost to the state. All electricity over there is working 24/7. The
air conditioners are also working but there is no one there. We are wasting
state resources. I hope am not going to see this project as it did happen to
the Komenda Sugar Factory? The government and his people must rise up and put
the necessary things in place so we do not have our amenities going waste. Open
the #OPEN UGMC NOW. I am for Reginald. Long live Mr. Reginald Sekyi Brown. A
patriotic citizen of Ghana. I applaud you for the magnificent campaign you
embarked on that got you detained. Your detainment has brought awareness to the
general public. God bless you. Long live the UGMC. Long live the University of
Ghana. Long live Ghana. Ghana must work again. Ghana will work again. YOUNG
POSITIVIST a concerned citizen of Ghana.
